Random acts of kindness

If you remember that some newspapers carried a story about a young man, struggling to make a career helped pay a stranded, traveler who needed extra cash for the excess baggage... that man is now President-elect Barrack Obama.

Well, this just happened today at about 1:30pm. I went out for lunch and to drop by my under-construction home. Suddenly, this man in his 60s comes out of no where in a derelict looking Nissan Sunny. He had tears in his eyes and asks for money for petrol to go back home to his sick wife. Whether he was trying to take advantage of me or cheat I do not know. At that moment I just remembered reading on Louis' blog “being generous when you’re taken advantage of.”

He asked for my mobile number and said he’d pay back when it appeared that I was hesitating. I gave him RM20 and told him "Uncle, you don't need to return the money" (in Cantonese of course). He wept as he drove off. I don’t know if I’ve been scammed but I think otherwise. It's unlikely that he'll be the next Prime Minister of Malaysia but I think the world would be a much better place if we all would commit to doing random acts of kindness every now and then.

In what was probably the coolest and best themed wedding (Pink Gothic!) that we've shot this year, Irnny & Af'fan, thanks for the honor and privilege to be part of your big day. We started off with a big dinner before the Akad Nikah ceremony at Irnny's home in Seremban. Af'fan showed his loving and gentle spirit when he shed some tears reciting his vows and responsibilities. This guy takes this very seriously and I'm sure they'll be a wonderful couple. I've never seen a pelamin covered with fresh roses before. The bersanding ceremony was held at 1388 Seremban Golf and Country club and the Pink Gothic theme was equally well executed.
Well, haven't really had time to catch up of sleep. Ten-years ago, I would have easily recovered from a month of 16-hour work days in 48 hours. Now it's much tougher. I guess there's a lot more responsibility on my shoulders now, from the burden at work (they don't pay you to do nothing) and of course, my responsibility to my lovely wife but also not neglecting church ministries and family and friends too. Right now, our humble lil' home is a construction zone and managing that as an extra responsibility doesn't help. I really can't wait to move out of our box in the sky to my new old home and have a pair of tail-wagging furry friends greet me when I pull into the driveway.

We just got back from probably 2008's coolest wedding (in our opinion of course). It was held at the bride's home and the 1388 Seremban Golf and Country club. Anyways, before the photo processing begins, I'll share a few photos of one of the most unique hotels I've ever stayed at. It probably could pass for a luxurious, over-built, over-sized wealth laden china-man kind of bungalow. What do you think?
If you've been following Don't Panik... do not panic I'm still alive. The past nine days or so have been terribly busy with work, work and more work. Sometimes, it's amazing how much the human brain can take and still function. Anyways, Two weeks earlier, we celebrated our one year anniversary, so a week later (someone beat us to the slot), we were slotted to bring the flower offering for service. And of course we had to have sunflowers. How can I not. Every time I see big large sunflowers, they just remind me of my beautiful darling. Yes, I'm waxing sentimental here but that's what I feel.
Despite the heavy rain the that drenched Petaling Jaya, it was a genuinely warm and joyful inside SS2 Tai Thong Restaurant. It was also very dry! Choon Mei and Heng Loon don't even look troubled as guests trickled in slowly and running late. They took the time to warmly greet and catch up with many friends and family that arrived. Today was just a simple dinner to celebrate their marriage and the big day is to happen a week later in Penang where Heng Loon is from. From the enthusiasm of the couple and the guests, it looks like one super big party! Yes, everyone had a great time and so did we!
Lowel i-Light battery mod

Not as advanced in many ways to Louis' battery mod but hey it works and I didn't think "out of the box" enough to use a Phono jack as a power socket. Maybe the i-Light wasn't that cheap to me that I didn't want to take a knife/cutter to it so early on in the warranty stage!

Anyways, back to the mod. I don't do video (but maybe with my 5D Mark II...) so I don't need serious run time. Weight is an issue since the light and the battery will probably be hanging off one long end of a mono-pod most of the time. The Lowel i-Light runs with a standard automotive H1 headlight bulb. The stock Osram bulb is quite warm at 4800K. Osram automotive bulbs are probably not color balanced and my i-Light bulb temperature would probably differ from one to another. I replaced them with Philips Vision Plus which is slightly cooler (5200K) but most importantly, 2/3 stops brighter at 3 meters (measured with my Sekonic lightmeter). I'm not sure about power consumption but I use them on my 4x4 truck and visibility is improved.

What battery would I need. Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) is a proven technology, and simple to obtain locally. Lithion-Ion is a bit more fragile but packs a higher energy density so the battery pack can be lighter. So, back to high-school physics.
W = VA
Power (watts) equals to Volts multipled by Amps.
The standard H1 bulb is 55 watts. Most cars run 12 volts so that amounts to about 4.6 amps. In reality, automobiles run at high voltages because with the engine turning, the alternator usually outputs about 14 volts. For my first attempt, I made a NiMH battery pack with 12 Maha PowerEx 2700 cells. Why twelve? These batteries are sold in packs of four so no point wasting two but the idea is detailed in the calculations below.

12 AA sized NiMH batteries in series output a total of 14.4 volts (1.2V x 12).

With 14.4 volts, I only needed about 3.8 amps to drive the i-Light at full power. I didn't build a current limiter into the battery so at full power it probably used a bit more. The other important bit was that to calculate runtime, you need to know battery capacity and the current the light is pulling. Quite easily done.

2700 mili-amp/hour equals 2.7 amps for one hour. 2.7 amps divided by 3.8 amps is roughly 0.71.
Multiply that by 60 minutes and you get 42 minutes.

Of course that's in a perfect world so I decided to use 50 minutes per hour for my base so 0.71 multiplied by 50 is just about 35 minutes. More than enough for my needs. However, charging a pack of 12 batteries is a hassle and they were unwieldy and heavier than what I wanted. Lithium-ion is definitely the answer but where do I get the cells? I decided to go for 18650 Li-Ion cells. They look like oversized AA batteries at first glance. Since Li-ion batteries are more sensitive, I decided to order a pre-made battery from Battery Space. My choice was a 4x 18650 cell pack. Li-Ion cells output 3.7 volts so four cells result in 14.8 volts. This is also how your digital camera battery is made. Look carefully and you'll see voltages like 7.4 volts (2 cell) or 11.1 volts (3 cell).

So, I bought this 4-cell pack from Battery space. Excellent service and super fast shipping -- I got it within a week. So I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them if you have specific battery needs. At about half the weight of my NiMH AA cells, I also got the Li-Ion smart charger which makes charging the battery pack a snap. The cool thing about this battery pack is that it comes with a status indicator. Kind of like the type built into your noteboook PC battery. Well made and put together, it saved me the hassle of wiring up individual cells. They also do custom packs if you have more esoteric needs. I modified it to take the standard cigarette lighter socket since that was what my i-Light came with. Interestingly, at full power, it's another 2/3 stops brighter compared to the NiMH pack but ran the battery pack slightly warm so I made a mark at about three-quarter turn on the i-Light's rotary switch. With the cables coiled and the battery pack snug in a neoprene pouch, it became a flexible light and with the built-in current limiter circuit on the battery pack, I know that I won't be over-discharging the circuit plus there's a low-voltage safety guard to prevent running the battery flat. A no-no for Lithium-Ion batteries and it also jacks the safety factor up so that's always a good thing.

Still plenty of juice after two weddings

How long of a run-time do I get with this Li-Ion battery pack? The cells are rated at 2400 mili-amp hours but at 14.8 volts.
55 watts divided by 14.8 volts (voltage) gives me 3.7 amps
2400 mili-amp/hour equals 2.4 amps for one hour. 2.4 amps divided by 3.7 amps is roughly 0.65.
Multiply that by my conservative 50 minutes and you get 32 minutes, just a bit less than the 35 minutes of my NiMH pack.

So far, I'm happy to report that the on-off-on-off kind of use actually results in fairly long runtime. I've used it for two shoots without charging and the battery still is at three dots. It also takes about 45 minutes for a full charge (from 2 dots) and it a small handy package. My next mod will be to replace the cigarette lighter plugs with Phono jacks and to pack the whole unit, phono jack, battery status monitor all with a neat heat shrink pack. That will reduce the messy wire arrangement I have now. That said, Battery space already saved me a ton of work and I could have a working battery pack for my i-Light within thirty minutes of opening the box (time needed for adding the cigarette socket). After this, probably I'll get a second battery pack but for a more compact arrangement, I might get the square pack or make a more compact unit with Lithium Polymer flat cells. I'll put up an update when I mod the pack with a Phono jack.

Portable and flexible lighting!

Storing your photos

During a recent wedding that I was photographing, I had a short chat with the videographer during the customary "how we were born and met" slide show. He commented that nowadays, with the plethora of digital cameras, the weddings of this coming generation might just have a slide show that will last over two hours instead of fifteen minutes. My reply was maybe or maybe there won't be a slide show because the disk crashed and they have no photos left. Don't laugh. This actually happens. A colleague of mine just remarked that he lost a year of photos of his two kids due to a disk crash. Even DVD backups didn't save him. One DVD was unreadable after two years. The second one was partially readable. When making backups, do we even bother to test the backups? Another story I heard was that of a notebook theft, resulting in the lost of all the photos. Backup? Well, a flaw in the backup to portable hard disk methodology. The backup hard disk was kept in the notebook bag. Oops!

Right now, my main PC stores the recent 1.5 years of photos, backed up every fortnight to my storage server where it sits on two mirrored hard drives. My storage server is locked down to prevent anyone opening the case but also cable locked to my desk. Anyways, big heavy (15kg) boxes aren't easily stolen. I'm still working on an off site backup solution. In a nutshell, duplicate, duplicate, duplicate. I buy a pair of disks every 18-months. This allows me to retire the smallest pair after 3-years. Experience since 1990 has shown me that chances of disk failure increase tremendously after three years. All my disk failures were disks four years or older. Of course, there was one odd case but generally, three years is a good time plus it allows me to hit sweet spots of disk prices. Such as when I got a pair of 320Gbs. Next came my 500Gbs. Soon, it'll be a pair of one terabyte disks. So I almost never burn to DVD. What do you do? Sound off in the comments if you have other ideas or methods.

Wilayne & David - Ipoh Big Day

While the rest of Malaysia was Celebrating Independence day (or Merdeka), Wilayne and David were doing the opposite -- they were getting married! Although road closures in downtown Ipoh caused some delays, everything still went very well, from the action packed Bride pickup and negotiation at the Syuen Hotel in Ipoh, back to David's place and then back to Syuen for the dinner. During the afternoon, we took about an hour and dropped by the nearby Ling Sen Tong (Lime stone caves) for a fun shoot that resulted in a cool set of photos. Just to show you don't need a lot of time to get great shots. It was the first time I was there too so it doesn't mean that an unfamiliar place means poor photos!
